Mid-Atlantic Water Program

Since late 2002, the Mid-Atlantic Water Program (MAWP) has addressed the area’s major water quality issues in a uniquely regional way. By developing a cohesive network of extension and research faculty from nine land grant universities across Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, the MAWP has created a forum for interstate, interdisciplinary collaboration founded on the need to protect our natural resources and to ensure safe water quality for human health and food production.

Funded by the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, as a component of the National Integrated Water Quality Program (NIWQP), the MAWP’s mission is to improve water quality by creating and disseminating science-based knowledge that facilitates change in environmental management and policy, industry practice, and individual behavior. To achieve this mission and address the interests of the national themes set forth by NIWQP, the Mid-Atlantic Water Program has developed tools, hosted events, published reports, and offered trainings in the areas of nutrient and waste management, water policy and economics, and drinking water and human health.
